It has up to 12 cores in the CPU and up to a 19-core GPU, with up to 32 GB of unified memory. It packs an 8-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU (two more buy GPU cores than its predecessor), along with support for up to 24 GB of unified memory. It has an up to 32-core CPU (with 24 performance cores) and a GPU with up to 80 cores. It's confusingly the most powerful chip in the M-series lineup—even better than the latest M4 Max. As for GPU performance, it's said to be up to 50 percent faster than the M1 Max and 20 percent faster than the M2 Max.
M4 Pro and M4 Max Chips

I tested the model with a 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16 GB of unified memory. With the M3-powered model, I often hit 30 percent after eight hours, so there's an improvement. It gets more complicated with the MacBook Pro models, especially since we're midway through the M5 processor rollout, and the M4 Pro and M4 Max are still in the mix. However, word on the street is the Pro models will be thinner, along with boasting an OLED display. Interestingly, while a redesign is rumored, these models are still reportedly 14-inch and 16-inch models. A report from AppleInsiders reveals product identifiers for upcoming M5 and M6 Macs, with 15 Mac models allegedly in development.

Storage options range from 256GB of SSD for the base-model MacBook Air and 8TB of storage for the MacBook Pros with the M4 Max chip. With this being the standard today, grabbing a base model should be fine for most non-pro-level users. And the more demanding each program is, the more RAM will be required. You’ve likely heard the analogy comparing memory to the amount of workspace available on a literal desktop surface, whereas storage is the amount of drawers you have to store projects to work on later. The M4 Pro chip has 24 or 48GB memory options, while the M4 Max chip supports 48, 64 or a whopping 128GB of RAM. Your options for RAM (or unified memory) varies, but when Apple switched to the M4 chip for the MacBook Air, the lowest amount of RAM you can get was bumped to 16GB.

- Multiple reports indicate that Apple may announce a 12.9-inch budget MacBook that will retail for $599, very much taking the place of the M1 MacBook Air.
- The 14-inch MacBook Pro is priced starting at $1,599, with M4 Pro models starting at $1,999.
With the October 2024 and October 2025 refreshes, Apple has not introduced any design changes, and the MacBook Pro models appear identical to the 2021 models for the fourth consecutive generation. It's not worth getting the M5 MacBook Pro if you're coming from an M3 or M4 machine, but those who have an Intel Mac or an early M1 machine will notice the speed improvements. Reviewers noted that the M5 MacBook Pro has little in the way of updates year-over-year, with the exception of the M5 chip and a faster SSD. The MacBook Pro models also include a six-speaker sound system with two tweeters, four force-cancelling woofers, and wide stereo sound. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip lasts for up to 24 hours when watching movies and 16 hours when browsing the web.

The 14-inch M4 Max MacBook Pro lasts for up to 18 hours when streaming video or up to 13 hours when browsing the web. The camera supports Center Stage for keeping you in frame, and it works with Desk View, so you can show what's on your physical desk in front of you if needed on a video call. The image signal processor makes sure images are sharp, and allows for natural-looking skin tones, and there's also the option to use an iPhone as a webcam. The SSDs in the M4 Pro and M4 Max support speeds up to 7.4GB/s, and Apple says the M5 has a 2× faster SSD. In this mode, performance is optimized for system-intensive tasks, which can result in louder fan noise.
This chip is currently only available on the 2025 Mac Studio. It also comes with 96 GB of unified memory, with the option to upgrade up to 512 GB, while SSD storage can be increased to 16 GB. Apple claims it's up to 2.5 times faster than the M1 Ultra.
- Overall, the M4 MacBook Air is a good, if minor, update to an already fantastic laptop, and it has a lower price to boot.

The base price was also raised, although the base configuration of the 2017 model was retained until July 9, 2019, when it was discontinued along with the Retina MacBook. It was updated with a Retina display and Intel Y-series Amber Lake i5 CPUs, as well as a Force Touch trackpad, a third-generation butterfly mechanism keyboard, and the Touch ID sensor found in the fourth-generation MacBook Pro, but without the Touch Bar. In 2017, the MacBook Air received a small refresh, with the processor speed increasing to 1.8 GHz. It was also the thinnest MacBook ever, at a height of 0.14–0.52 inches (0.35–1.31 cm)

The M4 Max with 40-core GPU earned a score of 190,329, which means it is up to 25 percent faster than the equivalent M3 Max chip. As for the Metal benchmarks, the M4 Pro with 20-core GPU earned a score of 110,556, which means it is approximately 40 percent faster than the M3 Pro in terms of GPU speeds. The 16-core M4 Max earned single-core scores of 4,000 and multi-core scores of 26,675, which means it is significantly faster than the 24-core M2 Ultra chip. That means the M4 Pro with the 14-core CPU is faster than the 24-core M2 Ultra chip that's in the Mac Studio. The M5 chip earned a multi-core score of 17,862, which makes it up to 20 percent faster than the M4 chip in the prior-generation MacBook Pro. Early M5 chip benchmarks suggest that it could be as fast as the M4 Max chip in single-score performance.
